Search Engine Optimisation

Search engine optimisation is a simple theory, but can be complex to accomplish. It is the art of being found by the search engines. Sounds simple... get the algorithms that the search engines use and design you website to match. Mmmm, sounds simple but, and that is a big but. Although, through experience, you can gain an insight into how the search engines operate there tends to be no hard and fast rules that tend to be made public.

Being found on the internet is desirable, but a prior question needs to be answered first. Being found for what? Unless this question can be answered first then it makes it difficult to decided what you need to focus on in your website. Many websites still rely on the company name being the main success hit on the search engines. This can be good, but it means that people already know of your company before they do a search. On some of the websites that we at PowerShock manage, we can see all the search options that people are using to find a particular site. This can be very revealing and can highlight a need to have an integrated marketing strategy.

Once the previous question can be answered. We at PowerShock have a number of tools at our disposal that can help our customers decide on how the website is engineered, both in layout and content. We can also look at how your competitors have constructed their sites and how they are performing in the SEO stakes.

There are many factors involved in optimisation that span from keeping the content fresh to selecting the correct metatags and content. Below is a graph of link popularity for one of PowerShock ’s customers. See if you can spot where we began to focus on SEO.
