GRAY’S TASTER COURSE WEEKEND

Over the weekend of Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th February we are offering five, Taster courses which provide an opportunity to explore a new discipline or have concentrated time in a subject which is familiar. The courses will be relevant to newcomers and both Foundation and Intermediate students. Places range from 12 – 20 depending on the course. The course fee includes the key materials required.
Note: we require a minimum of 11 students to run each of the courses.

Life Drawing Taster - Rebecca Westguard

ONE DAY course: running both Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th please state preference.
10.00am – 4.00pm
20 places each day - Course Fee £60
Course Outline: Life drawing session which examines Venetian masters and their appreciation of the human form. Initial warm up studies will fleet through some much admired Renaissance poses whilst their origins are explained. From Bellini to Titian, Tintoretto to Veronese. This will be followed by a sitting for the remainder of the day which recreates a pose offering a glimpse into the composition of a selected Venetian Renaissance masterpiece. This short course taster session offers a new and refreshing opportunity to draw the figure during an all day session at Gray's school of Art.

Digital Photography Taster - Bill King

ONE DAY course: running both Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th please state preference.
10.00am – 4.00pm
12 places each day - Course Fee £60
Course Outline: Digital photography workshop in the morning and image manipulation in the afternoon.
· Students will take a series of photographs within the Gray’s building or externally (weather permitting).
· Image transfer and manipulation using Photoshop on Apple Macs.
· Students will be provided with a memory stick included with the course fee to take home and print the images externally. e.g. Boots.
· Note: Digital cameras, USB card readers will be available as required
· Students who bring their own digital camera should also bring their USB cable.

Photography Taster - Anne Campbell & Neal Murray

ONE DAY course: running both Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th please state preference.
10.00am – 4.00pm,
12 places each day - Course Fee £60
Course Outline: This course is designed to give an introduction to SLR camera use and darkroom photography. It is widely acknowledged in the industry that an understanding of analogue processes leads to a greater understanding of light and exposure and therefore better image making, whether or not the photographer then goes on to work digitally or with film. Cameras, film and paper will be provided. Suitable for those new to using SLR camera’s and film processing and printing, or those who wish to refresh their memories.
Hours:
10.00am – 12.30pm Introduction to SLR film cameras (cameras will be available as required, or bring your own if you have one),
We will then take a selection of photographs and process the film.
12.30 – 1.00pm Lunch break
1.00 – 4.00pm Make contact sheets, Print photographs from negatives and toning

Jewellery Taster - Aubin Stewart

TWO DAY course: Saturday 11.00 – 4.00pm and Sunday 12.00 – 4.00pm
12 places - Course Fee £100
Course Outline: Found Object Jewellery
· Using found objects, junk or materials from everyday life with simple jewellery techniques students will transform something ordinary into their very own piece of wearable art.
· Examples of what to bring: driftwood, broken china, buttons, vintage photos, broken jewellery, watches, circuit boards, typewriter keys, knitting needles, old biscuit tins, aluminium cans, packaging, bottle tops, old bank cards, newspaper.
· Students will be required to bring a selection of their own found objects / materials to the workshop and some ideas of what they would like to make.
· Copper and complimentary materials will be provided.

Life Painting Taster - Brian Grassom

TWO DAY course: Saturday 2.00pm – 4.00pm and Sunday 10.00 – 4.00pm
15 places - Course Fee £100
Course outline: Students will engage, over a day and a half, with painting a model from life. On Saturday afternoon, after an introductory presentation, students will draw the figure onto a support. On Sunday, students will complete drawing, commence blocking in with colour, and work towards a finished painting. The sessions will include general instruction and personal tuition.
Materials: Students will supply a support (up to A2 size paper, canvas board, or canvas etc.); painting medium of choice (gouache, acrylics, or oils); a selection of brushes; palette or mixing tray; media (acrylic or oil media such as retarder, turps, etc), jars or tubs for holding media and cleaning brushes, rags or paper towels for cleaning. Easels, drawing-boards, and trestles will be provided.

NOTE - LUNCH
Students will need to bring a packed lunch – there are only vending machines within the Gray’s building.
